On Monday, a chain reaction on I-45 in Texas involved three vehicles, and, ultimately, a charge of intoxication manslaughter:
The first vehicle stopped because of a flat tire (the driver stopped in the middle of the roadway because there were no shoulders to pull off on).
The second vehicle pulled up behind the first with flashers on, attempting to warn other oncoming drivers.
The third vehicle came up behind the second and smashed into it, killing the woman inside.
As Scott Engle reports for the Montgomery County Police Reporter, that third driver first told police that a white pickup had hit the second vehicle, not him - but after performing an investigation, it was clear that his vehicle (which had left green paint marks on the woman's vehicle) was the driver who had hit her.
Though it is not clear from Engle's article what tipped police off - other than, of course, the driver's attempt to deceive the police - but eventually the police came to suspect that the third driver had been drinking.
