As Jay Gormley reports for CBS Dallas-Fort Worth, the Blasingames now have the bright blue DWI highway memorial marker in their living room, rather than out near the highway for passing motorists to see.
The Blasingames' daughter was killed in a DWI case when she was 16 years old, roughly two years ago, and had a road sign memorial put up in her honor, which reads: "In memory of Rachel Blasingame."
Based on a law passed by the Texas legislature, which allows memorial markers to be put up along roadsides where people are killed in drunk-driving accidents, these same memorial markers must be pulled down after two years.
"[The memorial] doesn't need to be here in my living room," says Julie Blasingame, as Gormley reports. "It needs to be out on a highway where it can make a difference."
According to Gormley's report, there are 125 memorial markers elsewhere throughout Texas, most of which have passed the two-year limit.
